Choosing the Right Gi

When it comes to buying a BJJ gi, there are a number of key factors to keep in mind. Considering fit, fabric, and style when shopping for a gi will help ensure that you find the gi that is perfect for you.

Gi Sizes

The way a gi fits is probably the most important quality there is when wearing a gi. Get a gi that is too tight, and you may not have the mobility and flexibility that you should. Get a gi that is too large, and you could be swimming inside of it. Also, most competitive governing bodies have regulations about how short your pant leg and sleeve length can be. Ultimately, your preference for how tight or loose your gi fits may differ from someone else.

Keep in mind that Jiu Jitsu gi sizing varies between brands. Be sure to use the sizing guide that is specific to the brand you are purchasing. Online reviews can be another good source for information about how a particular gi fits. Following these tips will help make sure your gi fits the way you want it to.

Style

When it comes to style, there are a lot of options out there. When you start looking for a new gi you should decide if you are looking for something tame, super flashy, or in-between. This will help you narrow down your search, and help with finding a gi that you’ll enjoy wearing.

There are a couple of things to consider in the realm of style. First is color. The range of colors available for BJJ gis runs the entire spectrum. Keep in mind that IBJJF only permits white, royal blue, or black gis in competition. If you are looking for a gi to use in competition, you may need to avoid other colors. If you are just looking for a gi to train in, you might consider other, non-traditional colors.

Now that we’ve covered gi colors, it’s time for the fun stuff…design. When it comes to design, it is a matter of personal preference. When it comes to design, Jiu Jitsu gis are continuously evolving. Whether you are looking for high-contrast stitching that stands out, cool and unique patchwork, or built in rash-guard linings, there is so much to choose from that you can definitely find a design that fits your style.

Fabric

When it comes to the gi fabrics, there are a number of different weaves to choose from (single weave, pearl weave, gold weave, etc.). We are here to demystify the options that are out there.

Single Weave

The single weave is a lighter weave. While it is not as durable as some of the other weaves, single weave gis are usually less expensive.

Double Weave

Double weave gis are thick and heavy. They are also much more difficult for opponents to grip than a single weave gi. However, the added heaviness can have an impact on mobility and speed.

Pearl Weave

Pearl weave is the most popular weave on the market. They are a hybrid of the single and double weave. The goal of the pearl weave is to maintain durability, while still being lightweight. However, pearl weaves can vary significantly between brands. Be sure to read other peoples reviews before making your purchase.

Gold Weave

Gold weave gis use a ladder arrangement making them both soft and sturdy. The gold weave is not as heavy as the double weave, but still tends to be very durable. Again, gold weave can vary significantly between manufacturers, so be sure to do your homework.
