Maintaining Your Gi

You've invested money in a new gi and want to make sure that you are taking good care of it. So, what is the best way to take care of your gi? The best way to make sure that your gi lasts a long time it to properly clean it.

Here are the keys to properly cleaning your gi:

  1. Don't wait to wash your gi. If you throw your gi in your gym bag after class, and it sits there for a week before you take it out and wash it, this is bad (and funky). Make a habit out of throwing your gi in the wash when you get home from training.
  2. Only wash your gi with cold water. Washing your gi at high temperatures can cause excessive shrinking. Nobody wants shrinkage. Also, warm or hot water can actually help stains set in the gi material.
  3. Do Not bleach your gi. When bleach is used on sweat (or any other protein based stain) it can cause the material to turn yellow. Instead, products like Oxyclean can help keep your gi looking new while avoiding the yellowing caused by chlorine bleaches.
  4. Hang dry your gi. Do not put your gi in the dryer. Don't have time to hang dry your gi? See step #1.

Jiu Jitsu gis are made to withstand the rigors of training. With a little care, your gi will last you a long time.
